Looting, COVID-19, & Tornado Warnings: Chicago’s Triple Play

I wish I could report a lottery win or a pot of gold found at the end of the rainbow!

Instead, I’m writing about the ‘off the charts’ day that was Chicago yesterday (Monday.)

The first thing I heard about yesterday morning was the awful, senseless, and ridiculous scene that had unfolded during the overnight hours. Wide-spread looting took place in downtown Chicago, with beautiful store-front windows smashed to pieces while individuals decided to help themselves by brazenly walking over shattered glass, grabbing whatever they fancied.

As many of you know, I spend a lot of time in downtown Chicago; to see the places I literally shop at being taken over by angry looters was almost too much to bear.

Ah, but it was only Monday morning. Surely the day would get much better, wouldn’t it?

With COVID-19 cases nowhere near a flattened curve, I tried as best as I could yesterday to stay positive.

The day went on, and I was hopeful for something positive to occur.

That’s when I heard the community warning siren blaring outside. Quickly I grabbed my phone only to see a TORNADO warning on my screen for the City of Chicago and surrounding areas.

Wait, what? A tornado coming towards Chicago. I didn’t know that tornadoes happened in this area. Apparently, it is a rare occurrence. It just seemed to be that ‘rare’ day with so many other ‘interesting’ incidents going on as well.

The photo at the top of this post is what I saw before taking cover. Just for reference, can you see the tiny red light (beacon) at the bottom of the screen? It really does put into perspective how huge this storm was. I know it is difficult to see, but just above the red beacon is the beginning of a swirling water spout. It was at that point I moved away from the windows and hoped for the best.

As if I was expecting some kind of “Wizard of Oz” scene to come by my window, all I could see were leaves and the odd bag and debris. Still, I prayed that nothing else would find its way near the window.

I must tell you that I was scared silly. I saw some photos of huge, uprooted trees, damaged cars, houses, etc. Thankfully, this was not the case for my area.

Finally, the storm calmed, Lake Michigan became calm, and so did I.

So yes, my dear readers, that was Monday!

Something positive did come from yesterday. Damage occurred to ‘things,’ yes, but everyone is safe, and of course that is the most important thing to consider. Today is a brilliant, sunny day.

I hope whatever corner of the planet you find yourself in today that it is peaceful and serene.

Here’s to 2021!!! 😉

Glad you’re okay, Cher! My sister lives in Hanover Park, and she mentioned all this to me along with threat of a derecho? Crazy, crazy times. Happy today is better! Here in my part of TX it is sunny and hot, hot, and more hot.

There have been more Derechos hitting the Midwest lately this year. It is the rainy and you know what name not to speak season here in Florida. I can say water shoes and at least two umbrellas are with me at all times – ha! So glad to hear you are safe – take care 🙂

I am so glad you were safe and nothing happened to you. I can only imagine how scared you must have been. 6 years ago we drove from Buffalo to Boston. about 1 1/2 hours before Boston we received tornado warnings on the car radio and my daughter got one on her phone. I was so scared! My kids laughed at me.

I hear you well! And yes, so was I, completely! I forced my husband to stop under a bridge or exit the motorway… but no. He said, we rather try to get out of here. The problem was that many others thought so too and we were crawling instead of driving…

Totally! This was such a new experience for me because we don’t have Tornados over here. We are not used to that. I only know them from the movies and I too, thought of those movies… lol

Yes, it is strange to see what kind of damage they can do. LOL Yes, the movies with things going past the windows at great speed is scary enough on the screen, let alone in real life! Now this is making me wonder what other parts of the world don’t get tornados either, Erika! Cher xo

I only know tornados from the US actually. I heard of a tornado in Germany once but that must have been a climate change accident… lol.

Looting I never experienced except for on TV. People seem angrier nowadays and all around the world there is fuel waiting to be ignited. I’m pleased your safe. Tornadoes are horrendous. Been in one of does but was not transported to the munchin land in Oz. Here is a little something for you.

LOL LOL LOL I love it! Thank you! 😉 Cher xoxo

What’s happening in Chicago is troubling. It sounds like the city is going back to the way it was when I lived there and you just didn’t go into certain areas. I certainly hope the city leaders can bring order. Stay safe.

We actually have tornado “season,” around here. So not that unusual but lots of wind damage and a downpour. Power outages and just, as you said, a triple play. I can’t believe the things that are happening around here. Arggggg.

What a day, Cher! And here I am complaining about the current heatwave we’re experiencing. As you may know, I dislike both heat and humidity.

Do you know why the looting took place or what caused it? We don’t get tornados in the UK. We don’t get hurricanes either, although one did hit the south of the UK back ion the 1980s. I remember it very well.

Ah, bless! I know you do, Hugh, and it certainly isn’t pleasant. No, it is quite alright and acceptable to be complaining about the heatwave. I know you don’t often get that blast of heat so it is definitely something you could do without, no doubt at all.

I wasn’t quite sure, Hugh. I believe it was connected with a shooting. Despite the fact I’ve lived in Chicago for years now, I still cannot wrap my head around some of the things that happen here. You know I absolutely love this city, but when these things happen it is terrifying to me.

Did it? It must have been very frightening! I can handle LOTS of snow, but tornados and hurricanes are so scary to me. Do you recall if there were any warnings ahead of time, Hugh?

Thank you, dear Hugh! Cher xo

The only warning of the hurricane was when one lady contacted the BBC Weather Centre and said that the Dutch news was reporting an impending hurricane, Cher. However, Michael Fish, the BBC weather presenter that day reassured everyone that there was no hurricane on the way. How wrong he was. It caused a lot of damage to the south of the UK, and there were also many deaths. It happened in October 1987 and is now known as the great storm.

I was living and working in London on the night of the storm, Cher. I had a part-time job as a barman in a nightclub. I remember coming out of the club and being knocked over several times by the strength of the wind. The following morning, I came out of my nearby apartment to scenes that looked like something from a dystopian movie. I couldn’t get to my job at Selfridges because there was no transport running. Somehow, the local gay bar managed to open, so I spent most of the day in there.

Oh Hugh, I cannot even imagine how frightening that must have been for you. I’ll bet it was surreal! With no transport running, surely Selfridges wouldn’t expect anyone to be at work, let alone shopping! Hurray for the local, Hugh!! 🙂 🙂 xoxo

No, they kept their doors closed that day, Cher. Hardly any staff would have been able to make it in. I could have walked there, but the local bar seemed like a better place that day.

Well didn’t you just make my entire week, Chris! Ah, thank you so much! That is so incredibly kind of you to say and I really appreciate it! Thank you! When I saw the system moving over Lake Michigan I remember something you mentioned once. I asked you what surprised you the most about weather. You told me it was how quickly it could change. I sure got a dose of ‘shifting weather’ the day this photo was taken! Cher xo
