Today, in the United States, it is “Veterans Day”; in Canada and the Commonwealth Countries, it is “Remembrance Day”. Although similar in sentiment, Veterans Day is a day to honor those who have fought for the United States in all wars. In Canada and other Commonwealth countries, Remembrance Day is to remember the soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in duty to their country. I feel the day is the same, no matter which side of the border we are standing.

I have a very strong connection with the Canadian Armed Forces. Having had both of my brothers serve (one with the Canadian Army and one with the Canadian Air Force), this day has a special meaning. I am so proud of them both.
I hope you will join me today in honoring our American, Canadian, and Commonwealth country veterans and those who have fallen with a moment of silence and reflection. Oh, and Grandpa, you know how proud we all are of your service in WWII (1939-1945). I hope you are aware wherever you are.
Blessings to all who have served and served our countries. We will never forget you.

Sad that there has to be wars.

God bless these people. 🙏🏻❤️ What makes these countries Commonwealth countries, Cher? Is this tied to the United Kingdom?

Thank you so much, John. Yes, that’s right. All countries under the Commonwealth keep ties with the UK. They were once part of the British Empire. Some have chosen to leave over the years (India, for example).
Canada has its own constitution, and the UK no longer has governmental powers over Canada. However, the ties are more for cultural reasons. I hope that makes sense, John! Cher xoxoxo

It makes perfect sense, thank you for the clarification, Cher. In some sense, aren’t the people of the US still a part of the UK since many of us have genes that are traced back to the UK?

Most welcome, John! I completely agree with the ties between the people of the US and the UK. However, when the American Constitution was formed, that was basically ‘it’ for any formal ties to the UK.
If Canada had done the same, we wouldn’t have been tied to the UK.

That’s a bummer. In the past, I have considered that perhaps the US would be better off in rejoining the UK.

I have wondered about that, John. I think the cultures are much too different now. But it is interesting to think about what that would have looked like.

Well, i have noted that people here use British terms like Spot On these days, and vice versa because I have read about American English becoming common over there. The internet and jet airplanes are likely responsible, otherwise how could this happen?

Yes, I agree that American English is becoming more common in the UK and other places for that matter. Definitely, John!
I’ve always used British terms because my heritage is Scottish/British. My family and friends use a ton of those terms, and I am usually not aware that I do it!
For example, I say, “a wee bit” or “defo” (for definitely) just to name a couple of words.
Thank you so much for your insight, John!
It’s all very interesting, isn’t it? Cher xoxoxo
