Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Where The Chicago River is Green!

Well now, look what we have here!

A little surprise occurred here in Chicago a couple of days ago. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the City of Chicago announced for the second year in a row that the St. Patrick’s Day celebration of dyeing the Chicago River green would not take place.

The large crowds that normally amass to witness this annual tradition was something that our mayor, Lori Lightfoot, did not want to happen due to COVID-19.

However, in a twist and some luck of the Irish, they did, in fact, go ahead with coloring the river the bright green hue that so many look forward to every St. Patrick’s Day. It’s just that they didn’t announce it.

Chicago Plumbers Union Local 130 has had the honor of bestowing the Chicago River with its neon green color since 1962. A vegetable dye is used to create this incredible sight:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, one and all! I hope you have a delightful, four-leaf clover kind of day!

That’s such a fun tradition, never seen the river green in-person though. Is your mayor related to the Canadian Gordon Lightfoot?

Ah, the mayor has a big heart! I can understand not encouraging a “spring-break” event, but it was kind to allow the greening of the river, anyway. I knew it happened every year, but never knew what was the actual substance. Now I know! It is a very pretty green, too!
