Steam Rising on Lake Michigan & Frosted Fingers

Here is a phenomenon I don’t see too often in Chicago. Can you see the steam rising from the surface of Lake Michigan? This translates into one word: COLD!

When I took these photos this morning, the temperature was a balmy -8F, or -22C! As someone who lived in one of the coldest cities in North America for many years (Here’s looking at you, Winnipeg!), you’d think I would find this weather a breeze! LOL

Can you see the steam? In the first photo, you can see it on the lake’s surface and above. In the second photo, it is more apparent in the row of clouds.

However, it is not typical for Chicago, and I’m afraid I broke one of my cold-weather cardinal rules: do not remove your gloves when they are this cold! This is so true, especially when standing at Lake Michigan with the wind blowing towards you (making the temps feel much colder than even in these icy circumstances).

Yes, I wanted to get some very COOL (pun and well, no pun) photos this morning. I took off my gloves to take the images, and within 30 seconds, my hands began to hurt. Not a wee tingling, but full-on pain.

As fast as I could, I put my gloves back on and realized my “practice what you preach” internal speech was loudly poking at my frozen fingers.

Once I reached home, I slowly warmed up my hands with a towel. The tips of my fingers are still red after four hours, but I don’t have frostbite, thank goodness.

So, please heed what I didn’t do, and keep those gloves on if you find yourself in the frost zone!

I know about cold – it was the coldest day on record at the time, but bright and sunny a foot of snow and I’m in my warm snowmobile suite – when the ice cracked over the wooded stream and I had to dismount and stand in the knee deep water to manhandle the doggone machine that was stuck half in and half out.

No, this was in northern suburbs of Chicago. -40 I think. I had my two young daughters on the back seat, as I stood, I lifted them off safely but it took me previous minutes to extricate the snowmobile. I knew I needed it to race back of lose my toes – God helped me. No joke. I was not strong enough – it was 450 pounds. He strengthened me , or sent an Angel, and it was truly a miracle. The ice was not think because it was running water at the bottom, covered my snow.
I ran cold tap water in the bath tub and stomped my feet in it for 20 minutes and guess what? No one even knew! The girls were too little to understand and I kept it quiet. Otherwise they’d not ever be allowed to ride again! Brrrr! That was soooo cold!

God is Real, and the hymn , β€œ What a Friend We Have in Jesus” is coming to my mind as I relive it in my memory just now. So thank you for causing me to remember!

I do see the steam rise. It reminds of a mirror being held up to the sky with the clouds on the lakes surface.
Similar to humanity with Spirit holding up a mirror to us. What we chose to think becomes the reality in the mirror. Sorry got too deep. I hope you have a pleasant week. Hugs. ❀️ ❀️ ❀️

Very beautiful photos, Cher! I’ve seen this effect in Port Huron, Michigan on the south shore of Lake Huron, always beautiful! I’m glad that your fingers don’t need amputation! Negative 8 is dangerous cold and you know I’ve lived in it for years. πŸ₯Ά

Is Lake Michigan the Great Lake that has those ice invasions onto land, too, or is it one of the other?

Hi Doug, that’s a great question! I don’t think it is Lake Michigan. However, I seem to recall a video of that very thing happening from Lake Erie. If it ever happens here, I’ll be ready with my camera! Cher xoxoxo

Wow! And we Brits complain when the temperatures go below freezing, Cher (which it is right now). And it only takes one flake of snow to fall for the country to come to a standstill. I can’t imagine how cold -22 must feel. I’d definitely hibernate until it got above freezing.
Beautiful photos, though. But I’m glad you got your hands warmed up as soon as you got home.

Oh, you are experiencing freezing temps there right now!

LOL I literally laughed out loud when I read your comment about one flake of snow to fall for the country to come to a standstill!

I think -22 would not be a welcome experience! I completely understand! Hibernating sounds lovely until above freezing, Hugh!

Ah, thank you so much! Yes, thanks, Hugh, I was embarrassed by my lack of cold-weather protection, since I defo know better! πŸ˜‰ Cher xoxoxo
