It’s Friday, and it’s also the 13th; put them together and what have you got? A rather feared Friday the 13th! A number of years ago I used to be extremely superstitious regarding Friday the 13th. And then something quite nice happened: I decided to turn it around and declare it, “Friday the 13th Fantastic Day”.
Oh, this might sound trite, but for those of us who grew up with many superstitions sprinkled into our believe systems, the occasion to somehow ‘reverse’ the consequences of salt spilling, black cat path crossing, and walking under a ladder woes was a welcomed idea indeed.
“Coincidentially” (*biggest grin*) I began to notice very good luck on Friday the 13th. Was it my imagination? Was it my newly found confidence in standing up to superstition? I BELIEVE it was my thoughts becoming my reality. And so, now I focus on great stuff coming my way (not just on Friday the 13th, but everyday); lo and behold, it works!
Back to the fear factor of Friday the 13th. I thought I’d provide you with a list of 13 ways to have a good day today! In no particular order (although I must say I rather like Number 13!):
- Sing a song you love out loud, even a few lines; remember back to the time you first heard it and how it makes you feel each time you hear it now;
- Type, “Do a Barrel Roll” into Google and watch what happens;
- Click on this link for two minutes and fifty-nine seconds of genuine grinning: Link: Happy, Didga Style!
- Make a list (even a mental one) of things you are grateful for, however small you think they are;
- Pay someone a compliment today, whether it be a person you know, your local barista, or someone you meet along the way today (“What a cute puppy!” not only makes the doggie parent happy, but it will make you smile, I guarantee it);
- Do something slightly out of your normal routine today, even if it is walking an extra block;
- Focus on what is in front of you and consciously make an effort to see it from a different perspective (I once stood on the sofa just to see what the room looked like from a different vantage point);
- Complete a task today that could be given the procrastination award for your ability to pretend it doesn’t exist (I have several awards of mine own for this one! *LOL*);
- Give yourself permission to say, “yes” to an indulgent treat (even if it is a small piece of birthday cake; hey, where did that come from???);
- Renew your library card, go to the library, or even look up photos online of amazing libraries and feel the endless possibilities for knowledge only clicks away;
- Help someone with a simple gesture, such as holding the door open for them and making eye contact with a smile for good measure;
- If you happen to be in a long line at a store, try feeling calm instead of impatient; timing is everything, and unless your hair is on fire, a few extra minutes of patience will be greatly appreciated by the store clerk (which will, in turn make them feel better too); and
- Take a break from the ordinary today; you’ll see it is quite extraordinary after all!
Sing a song in my head, Okay! how about that song from my best friend’s wedding? the one with Julia Roberts? lol

Lovely post, Cher – and very true 🙂 Where I live (in the UK) black cats are considered lucky – today one crossed my path twice, so it really is a matter of how we see things when it comes to superstitions.

Great ideas. I particularly like the one about standing in a check out line. If people don’t want to get all worked up, why don’t they try shopping at a more convenient time and not at the last minute? Take your time, enjoy. There’s always interesting people to watch while in line. Use it for blogging inspiration. 🙂 I was born on Friday the 13th so naturally I love this day. Happy Friday the 13th!

Why thank you my dear! I agree, people really get bent out of shape for having to wait a few minutes in a line. I have had people stare at me for (heaven forbid!) using a few coupons. I have learned to smile at this and just go with it! And I can certainly see why you love Friday the 13th! Happy Friday the 13th to you, too! Thank you! Cher xo

Despite having a WWII blog, I try every day to give someone a smile – that makes MY day!
As far as standing in line – no one likes that – but I find that striking up a conversation with the person going “Tsk” behind you helps to pass the time for both of you.

Ah my dear, I can always tell what a wonderful heart you have. I think it’s a wonderful thing that you make an effort to smile; yes, it does, doesn’t it? And the “tskers” don’t know what to do when a chat starts! *LOL* Sometimes it seems to take the tsk right out of their mouths! Go figure! Thank you for your comments as always! Cher xo

Well done for overcoming yours fears. I’ve never been superstitious, so I find thirteen useful, as lockers with that number are usually free, travelling by plane on a Friday 13 is cheaper etc. Sadly, the terrorists, playing on people’s superstitions, have now used that date, so that yet more people will associate some arbitrary numbers with bad events.

I do wish I didn’t have an superstitious beliefs at all, Hilary! Excellent that you never have superstitious beliefs and it’s paid off!! 🙂 🙂 Yes, I completely agree; that is precisely what they were doing. 😦 Cher xo

I’ve had that happen before as well! Suddenly I’m not following someone when clearly I am! Point 7: *LOL* I literally did that! You see, I’m all of 5’3″, so I wanted to see the room from a different vantage point! 😉 Stick the kettle on, please! Cher xo

That was so awesome!! They were having so much fun; smiles & all!! I almost got wet when Rover shook his fur and the waves splashing…loved it! I especially loved the Cat swimming along + the paddle-board, grinning “like a Cheshire Cat!!”. Thanks for the smiles. We all need it!

Isn’t that cool? This is an American dog trainer who lives in Australia. The video has had about 12 million hits! The cat is named, “Didga”; she is the smartest cat I’ve ever seen! You are most welcome, Our Quiche!! Cher xo
