Tuesday Shares: The Wrigley Building, Downtown Chicago

Isn’t this a magnificent structure?  The Wrigley Building in downtown Chicago is an iconic symbol of Chicago ‘back in the day.’  I have posted photos of this incredible building before, but not quite from this angle.

Completed in 1924, the two ‘towers’ that comprise the Wrigley Building were created in a ‘combo’ architectural manner:  French Renaissance along with Seville’s Cathedral’s “Giralda tower.”

The two structures are differing heights; the ‘clock tower’ contains 30 stories, while the other tower has 21 stories.

In case you are wondering (I sure did when I first moved to Chicago), the name, “Wrigley” does in fact refer to the ‘chewing gum’ folks.  William Wrigley Jr. chose this piece of land for the company headquarters, strategically located right beside the Chicago River.

Wrigley’s headquarters is no longer located in this building; however, current tenants include:  The Consulate-General of Austria, and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce (literally just to name a couple.)

Do you see the bridge that connects the two buildings? I must see if I can get up there to take some photos.

In 1957, humongous grasshoppers invaded downtown Chicago, with a notable climb up the side of the building. Oh, I should mention, it was for a movie called, Beginning of the End.

Now that’s something to ‘chew on’, isn’t it?
