Thursday Doors: Yamashiro Restaurant, Hollywood

The always lovely Norm from Norm 2.0 has a great weekly feature called, “Thursday Doors”.  He invites fellow bloggers to share unique and interesting doors that we happen upon.

Today’s door is the entrance to “Yamashiro” which is a Japanese restaurant located in Hollywood.  The view from this area is striking.  The building itself was constructed in 1914 on a hilltop as a place where the original owners could display their Asian artwork.

The building has changed quite a bit over the years structurally and for its usage.  However, the interesting aspect is that the front entrance is primarily original.  I took a look at some old photos from decades ago.  As you can see in the photo below, it certainly appears to be (for the most part) the same entrance, showing its Japanese-inspired glass pattern.

Although I couldn’t find the date this photo was taken, I think it is probably around the time it was built (1914).

From a private residence, to a secret club in the 1920’s for movie stars, this building also housed a WWII military school in the 1940’s.  These days it is a restaurant with a fascinating history.

It wasn’t until I saw Norm’s “Thursday Doors” post several years ago that I realized how incredibly interesting doors can be!  The old cliche, “If these walls could talk” would also be appropriate for doors, don’t you think?
