Hooray For Hollywood!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Well, well, now what do we have here, looming in the background larger than life? Why it’s the (in)famous, “Hollywood” sign that has become synonymous with seeking fame, fortune, and all of that sort of thing.

We took this photo from a phenomenal view located at the Griffith Observatory.  It’s a wonderful location to literally see “down” into rolling hills and Los Angeles in the distance.  The location has been used for dozens upon dozens of movies over the years.  James Dean’s, “Rebel Without A Cause” was filmed here.  I will post some photos of the Griffith Observatory area soon.

Oh yes, here is something I did not know (and perhaps you didn’t either; or did you?).  The Hollywood sign was never intended to be a permanent fixture on the landscape of, “La La Land” as Los Angeles is sometimes called.  No, it was placed in its location in 1923 and actually had four additional letters after, “Hollywood”; it spelled, “Hollywoodland”.  The sole purpose of the sign was to attract people to buy real estate in the area.  It needed serious renovations, so a new sign was erected in its place in 1978.  Each letter is about 45 feet tall.
