Lake Michigan in Chicago: “Ducking” From the Cold, Canada Geese, & a Sassy Squirrel!

What an ‘odd duck’ scene!

Last week, I took a stroll along Lake Michigan. Admittedly, it was ‘cold’ (well, cold for Chicago, not so much for my hearty Canadians!

I came across these three feathered friends, and three things came to mind:

  1. Were they playing shy for the camera?
  2. Were they sleeping and didn’t want to be disturbed?
  3. Were they chilly and wanted a break from the lake’s frosty temperature?

Hmm, I must admit it could be all three!

I didn’t want to disturb them (and also wanted to make sure I got some good pics!) I slowly walked past the orange-footed friends, only to find them startled. Not by me, but by the barrage of Canada Geese who honked from above:

Not to be outdone by its water-bearing buddies, I came upon this squirrel who seemed to have no issue participating in a staredown with yours truly:

If I spoke “squirrel,” I am sure this one would say, “Oh, it’s YOU!” Unless you have something better for me to eat than this wayward peanut shell, I have nothing to discuss!”

Ah, the wildlife in the concrete jungle!

yes, I remember seeing the deer and other critters outside my home in Michigan years ago and wondering how the heck they survive when it’s dead-calm and ten below outside! 🥶

It is a wonder, isn’t it, John? It reminds me of the very hearty creatures in Manitoba! Goodness, I have no idea how they survive the harshness of -40C! Yikes! I’m sure you are glad you live in NV now! LOL Cher xoxoxo

I’ve never been to Manitoba. Yes, I’m very happy that today will see almost 70 degrees!

Love it Cher. Especially how the ducks can hide away from the world in plain sight.

The ducks are probably just trying to stay warm. I still remember Chicago’s wind chill factor.
