I can’t say one way or the other, Cher. I know leeks come from the same family also.

We have these beauties in our back yard garden along with Chives, a cousin to Alliums.

Chipmunks & squirrels leave these alone because they dislike the smell. Tulips in the other hand…

Ah, do you, my dear? Well that is so interesting, as Don Ostertag (please see his comments in this thread) told me that the Alliums are related to the onion and leeks family. Now you’ve added the chives! This is great to hear!

Isn’t that something! I didn’t know they have a smell! I didn’t notice any from the ones I photographed, but I’ll have to check again next time I walk by that area!

Thank you, my dear! Cher xoxoxo

They only smell like onions when you cut the stems. The bulb tastes like onions to Chippy and Squirrels. That is also why tulip bulbs are tasty snacks for critters, Daffodils are not liked by critters because they too taste like onions. I haven’t taken a bite, just gardening tips!

Our alliums are in full bloom during May, Cher. However, I do rather like the skeleton they leave behind which is full of seeds. If you leave them, they will spread so you have even more of a display the following year (unless the birds eat the seeds).

Are they, Hugh? I am going to make sure to walk past the place where I took my photos, and I’ll keep checking to see if they have the skeleton (or if the birds eat the seeds.)

Here’s hoping they spread to have more of a display the following year (and that the birds get a wee bit of a snack should any not bloom!) Thank you, Hugh! Cher xoxoxo
