Macy’s in Chicago: Tiffany Ceiling, Shopping in Style

It definitely pays to look up when shopping at Macy’s Department Store in downtown Chicago.  Formerly “Marshall Fields Department Store”, this beautiful neo-Renaissance architectural style is amazing to see in person.

Built in 1893, the ceiling you are seeing in this photo was created by Louis Tiffany (yep, that Tiffany!) that includes 1.6 million separate pieces of iridescent glass.  The ceiling encompasses 6,000 square feet.

This particular area is the largest existing Tiffany mosaic in the world, and took 50 artists over 1 1/2 years to complete.

When you are shopping at Macy’s, you might find it particularly helpful to remember to look down once in a while; after all, you could find yourself having to step over an architect student who is drawing this magnificent ceiling.

I hope you have a Tiffany-inspired sparkling Monday!

I remember this…. I think it must have been Marshall Fields at the time. Splendid!
