Now arriving……….Union Station, Los Angeles!

??????????????????????

Now who has even seen a courtyard like this at a train station! We were thrilled to see the Los Angeles Train Station (Amtrak, Metrolink, and LA Metro) include a gorgeous area outside to sit while waiting for the train.  The station is called, “Union Station”; clearly representing the union of all train lines, unlike Chicago where there are a number of stations for different types of train lines.  Here is the station from the front:

??????????????????????

Now let’s take a peek inside the station:

The architecture at Union Station is a combination of three styles of architecture:  Moderne, Art Deco, Mission/Spanish Revival.  It was built in 1939, and truly is one of America’s last great train stations. These next two photos were taken of a spectacular space.  It is simply referred to as the, “old ticket area” and was unfortunately roped off to visitors.

It was fascinating to wander around such an impressive building and, likened to my thoughts aboard the Queen Mary, ponder who walked these halls decades ago.  Where were they going?  Were they excited to be traveling by train to see a long, lost love?  Or were they traveling simply for the enjoyment of exploring vast and never-ending countryside?  In addition, similar to the Queen Mary during WWII, Union station was used for heavy troop movement.

The next post will feature some absolutely incredible buildings.  I shall give you a hint:  one of them was prominently featured in a movie, and we had the opportunity to take a tour! Another has quite the history of a famous actress haunting the halls!  Oh what fun! Ah, I see the train to the next post is arriving soon; I better get aboard!

It is always fascinating to hang around any stations and watch people and the architect of the building.

Awh, thank you, dear Don! It is interesting because such a grand train station seems to be a thing of the past for the most part. I am so happy you like the light and space and the various architectural styles. They seem to work very well together, don’t they, Don? Big hugs, Cher xo

During my tour years ago, we were not taken to Union Station; nor were we advised it existed. If we were, we certainly would have made it our business to go there. I am struck with the beauty and design, thanks to your photos. Looking forward to your next blog. 🙂

Thank you for showing off our beautiful station to the world.
My first time to see it was as a child and have made many trips to LA to enjoy it ever since.
Hope you got to go across the street and eat an “au jus” at Philippe’s. The very best in LA!

Awh, thank you so much for your words and follow, too! It is gorgeous, isn’t it? How lucky you experienced that amazing station as a child! Well funny you would mention Philippe’s! We saw it while on an architectural tour, but did not have the chance to go there. Believe you me my dear, we will be making that stop next time! Thank you so much for the reminder! Big hugs, Cher xo

Forgot to mention, that before I ever saw LA ‘s Union Station, I was overwhelmed by the one in Chicago!!!!
We went from Indy to Chicago to LA when I was a little girl, I will never forget it.

Oh did you? We like the Union Station here in Chicago, but the Union Station in LA far supersedes it, I think! Aren’t these old train stations magnificent? Big hugs and thanks so much, Cher xo

Union Station!!!!! Before I moved to Canada I used to live in Little Tokyo – close to Union Station!!! Oh how I miss it! Thanks for the post! Union Station also has a good little cocktail lounge near the entrance – you can order small appetizers from the restaurant too!

Oh yes, we went by Little Tokyo! And we also saw that cute little lounge; I think it is called, “Traxx”? So these photos ring clear in your mind no doubt. The courtyard is soooo pretty! Thanks for your comments, Shelli! How is your sweet little baby? Hugs, Cher xo

Isn’t that gorgeous? I like the old-fashioned ones too, but that design is stunning. Next time I go to a train station I’m going to notice how boring and drab it looks. 😉

You literally made me laugh out loud! hehehehehe Yes, I feel the same way; other stations look so dreary in comparison. I have to wonder though, how many people are so busy trying to get their train that they don’t take particular notice of their incredible surroundings at that station. Then again, could be a metaphor for how people live life quite often. 🙂 Hugs, Cher xo

You got that right Cher, imagine how much people are missing in their own lives by having their noses attached to smart phones (at least the phones are smart). 🙂 Best wishes Cher. 🙂

*LOL* Agreed 100% my dear! On the train today almost every single person I saw was on their phone. When will people start talking to each other, as opposed to their phones? MEH!! And to you, thank you! Cher xo

We felt the same way, Sue! It was delightful to even walk through Union Station, but to sit and feel the excitement of such a wonderful building and courtyard and then to take a marvelous train voyage would be simply fantastic! Thank you, Sue! Hugs and blessings, Cher xo

I just love such impressive, grand old train stations. So majestic and such relics from a bygone era…an era I’m rather partial too. I love art deco and collect tea cups and accessories. Reminds me of my grandparents xx Rowena
