Will that be a martini or a chardonnay with your popcorn?

Evanston Movie Theater

Well here is a new one on me.  As I strolled around Evanston, Illinois yesterday, I came upon a movie theater.  And to what did my wide-eyed glance but appear?  A movie, some popcorn, and perhaps a cup or two of beer!

Now, I am most certain a lot of Canadians are collectively shaking their toque-covered heads right about now.  Hhhmmm, most interesting combination indeed.

Despite the fact that the premise of alcohol and public movie theaters would seem foreign to my fellow Canucks, the bigger issue I have is this:  Who washes their theater-sized box of Dots and/or Nerds down with a Budweiser, anyway?

Perhaps the next most logical step would be to simply combine everything into one of those plastic popcorn tubs and be done with it.  You know, instead of layering butter, how about sprinkling a few jolly ranchers on top for good measure.  I say, skip the olives in the oh so very dry martini and float them on top of the popcorn tub.  Ah, did I mention said tub is also laden with a few bottles of Molson Canadian?  I mean, please, we must have a foreign beer in there somewhere for decorum.

If there is a paradigm shift in the Great White North that I am unaware of, and alcohol is being served alongside the nachos and cheese whilst watching the latest Star Wars movie, please do me a favor and let me know.  Oh wait, I might be out in the movie theater lobby waiting for my beer foam to subside.  And as the sign says, “Don’t forget the snacks!”

Oh I love the movies where you get a recliner chair and they have servers who come and take your food order!

Oh yeah! You push a button and your server comes to take your order, etc. A bit pricey but cool way to enjoy a movie.

They say you learn something every day. I am putting this at the top of the learning list today! *LOL* So even though the movie is playing, someone will come and take your order? I must investigate! Thank you for this excellent info! Cher xo

When you’re up to a road trip you are about 6 hours (more or less) from one in either Missouri or Ohio 🙂 Cheers!

It looks like you have found out about a really nice way to watch a movie in a movie theatre. Hope you enjoy your first experience. They are very pricey, though. I don”t know about the rest of Florida, but here in South Florida, we have had at least one movie theatre that had food and drink service – again, very pricey. But it’s a nice way to impress a new date. One other thing; I like to go to a movie theatre where they have huge buckets of popcorn and if you buy these buckets, you can take them home. The next time you go to see a movie, bring the bucket and it will be filled to the brim at no charge. And keep bringing it back and getting it filled!

It’s always nice to have a good deal, especially when popcorn tends to be expensive (at least to me)! I am wondering if a lot of people reading my blog are gently laughing at how naive I was about this kind of cinema!! Cher xo

i am glad i’m not the only one that thinks it is an odd idea. there is a rise in luxury cinemas here in the uk with sofas, coffee tables and yes a bar!

It’s such a new concept to me! Wow, the cinema you mentioned sound very upscale. I guess I have always associated going to the movies (the pictures!!) as a casual, popcorn kind of event! 🙂 Cher xo

They actually do have theaters where you can have cocktails and apps. and a full course meal. I have never tried it, but wouldn’t mind at all. But that set up with just beer and M&Ms doesn’t appeal. I would stick with my diet coke and popcorn sans butter……since it already has butter all over it. 😉

Hi there! It all seems so strange to me. Perhaps I haven’t been exposed to the finer side of film! *LOL* Your combo sounds much more in keeping with I have found sitting near me at the movies! By the way, I love your site!! Thank you so much for stopping by The Chicago Files!! Cher 🙂

Cher – you’ve been away from your Canadian roots for too long. We have a “premier” movie theatre in Winnipeg where you can enjoy your glass of wine or various other cocktails while watching the lastest flics. They also serve you your food (chicken fingers, etc. along with the typical movie theatre menu items) in your seat. And you can reserve your seat ahead of time to guarantee yourself a good view. We’ve gone – not sure if its really worth the price. I’m good with my popcorn and regular seat.

Jan, really? Oh my goodness! *LOL* Well I agree with you my dear; popcorn and regular seat! But how does the service not interrupt the movie? And what about too much alcohol and people being loud? Oh, I am curious!! Cher xo
