Sunrise Over Frozen Lake Michigan: Mountain-Range Clouds

Well, now, what do we have here? I’d say this is one interesting optical illusion!

This is what greeted me this morning; an almost undetectable Lake Michigan, covered in a thin layer of ice/snow. Behind it, the clouds look almost like a mountain range, don’t you think? They seemed to be caught in the frost zone with wisps of cold air trapped in place.

The sun has a lovely glow with the clouds surrounding it, making such an interesting dichotomy of warm and cold.

What a lovely way to start the weekend!

I hope your day is filled with warm thoughts and sunny skies!

Did you know that when you get really cold air with light winds over an unfrozen body of water, steam is produced. And when the circumstances are aligned just right, ropes of smoke called “steam devils” form up off the lake. These are really cool, but it needs to be really cold for it to happen.

Hi Chris! Thank you so much for this fascinating information! I had never heard of “steam devils” before!
It is really cold here today (and of course, I have to add a caveat for my fellow Winnipegers) but not “Winnipeg cold!” LOL The temperature here earlier today was 1F (-17C).
I’m going to watch for those rascally steam devils, Chris! Thank you again for your explanation! This is great! Cher xoxoxo
