Igloos & a Canadian Prairie Setting Sun

Well now, what do we have here? Why, it’s an igloo! Could this be Canada? Why yes, yes it is!

My sweet, dear niece is a University student (college) who recently participated in a fantastic endeavor with some classmates.

Not only did they build igloos, but they slept in them for a couple of nights! Prairie snow was plentiful, so there was no lacking for materials to use for the igloo building!

As you can see, there were a number of igloos constructed, and despite the soon-to-be setting sun, a classmate of my niece’s was still hard a work putting the finishing touches on the roof of one of these incredible structures.

Cozy under a caribou blanket, my niece reported it was nice and warm in the igloo.

As I have spoken about before, this is another reason why I absolutely cannot complain about the winter weather here in Chicago. Knowing how I used to feel during a frosty Prairie February makes me sure to keep my weather woes in check!

Did you feel cold looking at these pictures? I get it, really I do. But as my hearty Prairie people like to say, “At least it’s sunny!”

Thanks hugely to my wonderful niece for allowing me to post these terrific, snowy pics!

Isn’t it something, Beth? I know they worked really hard building them, but then to sleep in them? Wow! Thank you, my dear! Cher xo

I am looking at the outdoor temp and then out the window and saying, ‘Well at least it is sunny’, an occurrence that hadn’t happened much in the last six weeks.

How fun! I never built one but as kids we dug into snowbanks to make a fort. This place looks deeply cold! Chicagoland must be far warmer than there Cher! 🇨🇦🇺🇸

LOL You have the unique experience of being from Michigan and having a lot of memories of the cold, and living in Vegas you know what it is like to have warm temps and tons of sunshine! I am envious, John! Cher xo

Thanks Cher. The climate here year round is so radically different, I couldn’t go back to the gray skies and cold. Need sunshine these days. 🌞

Beautiful sunrise and wow for those igloos, Cher 😀
As there are people, who live in igloos, it must be possible to stay warm there. Snow is good insulation too.

Ah, thank you, dear Irene! It is something that I wonder about. I think you are right; snow is good insulation although it seems counter-intuitive, doesn’t it? Cold = warmth! 😉 Thank you, my dear! Cher xo

I have heard that snow is a good insulator but it is hard to imagine! Good for your niece!

You are so right, JT! I am scratching my head trying to figure out how it is a good insulator! Ah, thank you! I’ll tell her you said so! She had a lot of fun! Cher xo

Mark, I read that the word “Eskimo” was used by the French (esquimaux) which means “one who nets snowshoes.” In Canada, the word for our Northern people (Inuit) actually means, “people.” I find their culture and incredible knowledge fascinating! Cher xo

Oh that looks like a lot of fun. I’d definitely give that a try if I could get someone else to build it for me. We slept in the ice hotel near Quebec City a few years ago and it was actually quite comfortable.

LOL Hi Norm! Yes, they had a lot of fun, but I know what you mean! If you built it you’d be so tired you’d fall asleep in it right away! Did you? I think that’s fantastic! I’ve seen photos of it from Quebec City and I believe in Norway if I’m not mistaken. What was it like? Were the beds made of ice? Thanks, Norm! Cher xo

They did, dear Erika! And my niece described it as, “toasty.” I want to find out about that, Erika. Why is it something so cold can provide warmth? Thank you, my dear! Cher xo

Yes, a paradox to me! It doesn’t even melt inside although it feels warm…

Beautiful photo and what an awesome experience! We were watching Hockey Day in Canada yesterday and one of the featured locations was Yellowknife, NWT. I was amazed at the bright sunshine and blue skies in the arctic.
