**Update: For an excellent description of what this weather phenomenon is all about, please see The Weather Network’s Meteorologist Chris Murphy’s explanation under the comments in this post (John’s comment). Thank you, Chris!
This has to be the most bizarre sunrise I have ever witnessed! This morning over Lake Michigan the sky was blanketed in clouds with a bit of fog. Then suddenly I saw a tiny bit of orange light. It was as if there was a thin blanket over it, making it appear ‘milky’ in color.
All of a sudden it became brighter, then lo and behold, the sun sheepishly beamed onto the horizon. No sunny skies, no puffy clouds, just grey as far as I could see.
This is the very first time I’ve seen the sunrise when the entire sky was grey. Have you ever witnessed this type of sunrise before? As quickly as it arrived, it faded behind the clouds.
I apologize that the photo isn’t clearer, but it was a difficult shot to catch!
I’m putting my order in with Mother Nature to draw back the grey curtains and let the sunshine roll in!
I hope Monday is a marvelous day for you!
I said Wow aloud! That’s a very odd sunrise Cher, nice capture! ❤️😍

Hi John, Hi Cher – hard to tell from this picture if this is what is happening here, but there is a very special name for when the sun or moon is dimly visible – almost like there is a giant fabric softener sheet in front of it diffusing its glow. This effect is called “Translucidus” and the ideal clouds to produce this are Altostratus – which are not so thick they completely block out the sun. Translucidus is a great indicator that precipitation is about 12-18 hours away (right about 75% of the time). Here’s a saying of mine for you to remember: “When clouds dim the sun’s glow, rain or snow, soon to show” Altostratus Translucidus…its all the rage with the kids these days 😉

Hi Chris, thank you so much for this excellent explanation! That’s such a great way to describe how the ‘giant fabric softener sheet in front…..’ because that is precisely how it looked to me! I love the saying too! Well if “Altostratus Translucidus” is all the rage with kids then I want to be one of the cool kids too! Hahahaha Thanks again for this awesome information, Chris! Cher xo
