Trite but True: The Little Things in Life Matter!

Little Things Matter

Ah, Sunday! For most of us it is the one day of the week we get to have some breathing space, relax, and let the week of harried and busy activities float out of our thoughts.

I must say I was hesitant to write this post, as I thought it might sound silly, and not as meaningful as the moment I experienced.  Nonetheless, I’ll give it a go here and describe something that happened to me this past week.

As many of you know, I’m either on a train here in Chicago, waiting for a train, switching trains, or on my way to catch a train! Perhaps that’s why so many of my moments of observation take place in ‘train mode’, as it were!

I was meandering my way from one train to another.  Some of the platforms here in Chicago are quite narrow; a daunting task to carefully get past others when it’s rush hour.

As I carefully made my way on the platform, a young man was walking towards me, wearing a hooded jacket, his face looking downward, his feet in somewhat of a shuffle.  I saw him pass by several people.  When he walked past me, for some reason he looked up.  I saw his face for but a few fleeting seconds.  He looked sad, defeated in some way.

With a gentle smile I looked right at him and sent him immediate thoughts of kindness and compassion.  He looked at me, and for a millisecond I thought I saw a change in his eyes.  As he walked passed me he looked down again, hood encompassing his face.

Despite the fact it was such a small, perhaps seemingly insignificant event, I felt that maybe, just maybe he felt kindness from a stranger.  The little things in life do truly matter.  I think we must be mindful of how we treat others and how even though our seemingly little thoughtful gestures might not appear to us as important, you never know if what you’ve done or said in the blink of an eye has impacted another in a most significant way.

Food for thought, wonderful readers!

Nice post! It’s often in those seemingly littlest things that much of life happens, so it’s important that we treat each moment and person we encounter with respect and kindness. Even when we fall short, we should keep trying.

Hi Brett! It is wonderful to see you! Why thank you so much for that. I agree; thank you also for the reminder to keeping trying even when we fall short. That is something to be mindful of, isn’t it, Brett? Cher xo

Cher, this is so true. Life is made of small day to day joys, only seldom do we experience life altering changes that affect us, we must live in the moment! Much love xo

What you are describing is something we all should do more often. Yes, send smiles and positive thoughts to those we meet. I know how happy I feel if I get only the slightest positive attention from someone passing. And there are people for whom this might be a turningpoint as well. Someone noticing, someone seeing in this cold, forbiddingly self centred society. You write it so well. Thank you for posting and reminding us.

Ah Leya, thank you so much for your wonderful words! I was nodding my head “yes” as I read them. That is such an important thing to remember: how do we feel when that happens to us. We can do the same for others and certainly set our intentions on providing the other person with positive thoughts and energy. With the state of mind that we are all human beings, it’s a guiding principle that I feel we should all adhere to when we can. Thank YOU, my dear! Cher xo

This is a beautiful story, Cher! I am glad you shared it. Yes, each little sign of kindness, a smile makes a difference and you can be sure that he felt it! You might have given something to him he needed so very much! Again, thank you for sharing this and I hope that many others will follow your example! 💖

Hi Erika! Thanks so much for your extremely kind and thoughtful words! Oh yes, I agree! We really do need to be mindful of showing kindness to others; a smile does make a difference, that is for sure! There is a gentleman who stocks the produce area of our local grocery store. I had seen him a lot but never spoke to him. Now we know each other’s names and it is delightful to ask him how he’s doing every time I see him. I don’t even need to be purchasing produce, but I always go by the area in case he’s there! Cher xo

Oh, this is so lovely! Yes, just showing others that they are worthwhile for who they are and not for what they do! Wow, you touched my heart with that again! 💖

A smile from a stranger on a really shitty day can really get to you in a good way. Just that tiny bit of compassion from someone who doesn’t owe you anything can really choke you up because it reminds you that people do care about each other without any hidden agenda.

“A smile is worth a thousand words”… I remember to this day something I read in a book something like: A smile is something you can give to another person without uttering a single word. A smile has no boundaries, no prejudices, no language but for a smile. Your smile at the young man could have been the only smile he got that day! Perhaps you brightened someone’s day by something as simple as a smile!

I was reading another post today that was saying very much thing same thing. It can be the smallest act of kindness that makes all the difference. I think something as simple as smiling at another person can be one of the nicest things you can do, plus smiling usually makes you feel better too!

I agree. I go out of my way to smile at everyone. 95% of the time, I get that smile returned in a genuine manner. So often people are just hurrying from one chore to the next and I want to remind everyone that we have a connection.

I so agree. If I catch someone’s eye I always smile or acknowledge them as you just don’t know what people are going through and just for that second they are not invisible and you could be making a difference.

I always make it a habit (almost a game) of smiling right a people as I pass them by. I love when you catch someone off guard from what ever they were thinking and see that millisecond of shock and then a big smile erupts on their face. Great post.
