The Library, Come for the Books, Stay for the View!

Winter Garden 1

I must admit I haven’t been to the Harold Washington Library in a while.  This library is massive; I believe there are 9 floors to explore.  How lovely is this:  grab a book, head up to the 9th floor, and relax in the Winter Garden.  Look up, and this is what you shall see:

Winter Garden 3

Look around, and you see this:

Winter Garden 4

Oh, and if you are still gazing upon everything but your newly checked-out book, you will see this:

Winter Garden 2

Despite my California dreaming on such a winter’s day, being in this delightful space at the Harold Washington Library was a pleasant time, despite the lack of palm trees.  Wait, what is that hiding in the back??? 🙂

That’s really nice. Certainly better than the Mandel Building. That was a mess… they moved the stacks there in the late 1970’s while they refurbished the old Central Library, then the movers and shakers decided to turn it into the Cultural Center, without a plan for where they would move the stacks. It was still up in the air when we moved to Atlanta in 1987.

I love the Harold Washington Library. Every time I am at the Cultural Center I try to picture what it looked like when it was the library! Cher xo

I think they just flat out ran out of room for books at the Cultural Center. They would have needed to build a new library eventually anyway.

Oh, that’s a grand place. It puts me in mind of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.

That is a lovely Library. The floors shine like glass!! I like the vastness of this place, 9 floors!!! That’s a LOT of books! How lucky we are to have such prestigious buildings to hold our books! I love books too!
