Ravishing Roosevelt Hotel

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s Sunday evening here in Chicago.  I’ve been in a rather reminiscing mood all day today.  I was thinking back to incredible vacation we had last year in Los Angeles and Long Beach, California.  The above photo was taken at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood.  This hotel is a true icon of an era that epitomized Hollywood in its heyday.  It was constructed in 1927, and has such a surreal feel to it.  I’ve never been one to take an interest in celebrities, gossip columns, or anything related to the somewhat ‘shallow’ end of the pool.  Yet the history, the buildings, the intrigue of nineteenth and early twentieth century North American culture fascinates me.

When walking through the halls of the Roosevelt Hotel, there were moments that seemed to somehow slip back in time only to be jolted back into the here and now by the ringing of a cell phone.  I did find myself trying to envision what it was like ‘back in the day’ (I’ve always liked that phrase; it never identifies a particular day – *LOL*).  What did everyone look like?  What were they thinking about?

Have you ever experienced a place, location, building (time-period in general) that you were drawn to for no specific explanation whatsoever?  Fascinating, I think.

I hope your Sunday (or for those of you located in other parts of the world) Monday is pleasant and with moments to ponder.

I stayed here some years ago. In fact, parts of the public areas of the hotel were closed off for part of the day because there was a motion picture crew shooting a movie. Great fun!

I never did hear what movie they were filming, unfortunately. Besides the trailer dressing rooms around, the most conspicuous thing I saw was the food spread out that morning for breakfast under the Kraft Services tent. 😀

The Roosevelt Hotel is one of my favorite places! Love it! Beautiful. It’s especially wonderful at Christmast. I used to go frequently. I have stories! Time for another visit.

I love old buildings and the sense of history that permeates them. Those grand 1920s hotels are pretty fabulous, that’s for sure. And I’ve always found stories of Hollywood in the 20s and 30s to be fascinating – it seemed a golden time. Lauren Bacall said that Hollywood in the 1940s was gorgeous, and these hotels offer us a glimpse of what it was like. I also went to Heart Castle, just along the coast and that, despite all my travels since, remains one of the most magical places I’ve been – just breathtaking.

I too love these old buildings, Helen! They really do give us a glimpse into an earlier time. Me too; I’ve always found stories of Hollywood during that period to be fascinating as well! Oh did she? I bet it was gorgeous, and the thing I like to do is walk around these old gems and literally envision people walking around from decades ago (or in some cases, even longer). That castle must be beyond grand! Wow, and I know you’ve traveled extensively, so I must put it on my ‘must see’ list!! Thank you, Helen! Cher xo

Well, I’ve still a lot of places left to see, but that certainly stayed with me as somewhere very special – the story of how it was built, the beauty of the landscape – it’s a glimpse into a lost time 🙂
