I took this photo last year while I was on Michigan Avenue, facing south. Michigan Avenue is, for all intents and purposes, the, ‘tourist’ street. Designer and high-end shops line the way, all vying for the almighty tourist dollar (or $1,000)! As for me, why, I love to take a fast-paced stroll (in truth it becomes frightfully crowded, so it’s more of a hastened jaunt) for the sheer and utter love of the architecture. Nicknamed, “The Magnificent Mile”, this 13-block area includes stores and shops too outrageously expensive for this coupon-clipping Canuck!
Although not visible in this photo, the Chicago River (recall the recent, “greening for St. Patrick’s Day”) is, ‘marked’ by sculptures flanking all four corners of the bridge. The Michigan Avenue Bridge allows visitors to easily access the riverfront by ramp or stairway.

I remember walking down there in the nineties, Cher. I was mesmerized by those buildings and the hustle and bustle of the city. Wonderful place.

Yes, I was there Cher. I found it to be such a beautiful city. I had the privilege of visiting the Loyola University on the Chicago Water front. I seem to remember it was the Northern Campus. I think you spoke of Evanston the other day and when I read the post I remembered our hosts taking us for a drive through Evanston pointing out to us some famous houses. Beautiful place. So yes I have a connection. You often post images of sunrises over Lake Machigan. I’ve also had the pleasure of seeing them. Beautiful sight and whenever I see those images of yours, I’m always transported back to some of those early mornings when I stood and watched. 🙂

How incredibly wonderful, Don! I am so glad to hear you had a lovely experience here. Ah yes, I know Loyola, and you are correct, it is a mere hop, skip, and a jump from Evanston. The North area of the city is gorgeous. I wonder if you had the same initial reaction that I had when you first got here and saw this huge city right on a massive great lake! What I find fascinating is looking out at the water, finding some serenity, and the next thing I know, a quick look in another direction to behold skyscrapers and the like. Interesting juxtaposition, but somehow it works! Thank you so much for your comments, Don! I smiled the entire time I read them! Cher xo

It’s strange I had a similar experience. Also became aware of the juxtaposition you describe. I remember coming out of a station, not sure which one and walking out on to the side-walk. The buildings were immense and I felt so small and then there was this underlying and quiet (another juxtaposition) roar of the city – also a kind of a vibration in the air. I’ve never forgotten that experience. I experienced something of that in New York, but far more pronounced in Chicago.

I am fascinated by this, as I have tried to explain the ‘vibration’ of Chicago, and I have never been able to do that very well. Looking at the view, if you replace the cars with those of another era, I can hear the 1940’s music playing in the background and men hustle to work in their suits and hats, while women carry their purses on their arms to visit shops, white gloves covering their hands.

It was interesting because the buildings are so tall they block out bright sunshine in the latter part of the afternoon in the summer. Quite deceiving, and yet it allowed me a good chance to snap this photo! Thank you, Amy! Cher xo

I just love strolling around city centres enjoying the interactions between the buildings and the light. Tourists are ever present in London but so are the locals going about their business. Cities are a target rich environment 🙂 Nice shot!

Me too! I feel the exact same way! We have lots of tourists who mingle with the locals as well. I remember the day when I was no longer a ‘tourist’; a couple from another state asked me for directions, and I was able to oblige! *grin* Ah, thank you! Cher xo
